Chinese artist Zhou Yi breaks free of the "Chinese element" in her designs for an Italian luxury fashion brand, Xu Junqian discovers in Shanghai.存倉As a Chinese artist appointed the creative director for a complete capsule collection of a foreign luxury brand, Zhou Yi says the last thing she wants in her works is the "Chinese element", stereotyped by many foreigners and Chinese alike, when it comes to fashion designs."They are so cliche and surreal," the Shanghai artist says, casually lying in a swivel chair at her studio in a beautiful English Renaissance-style two-floor building, the residence of a Hong Kong real estate tycoon in the 1920's.In April, the artist's studio announced jointly with Italian luxury brand Iceberg that a miniline of the brand — Breaking the Ice, Iceberg by Zhou Yi — will be launched in global stores of the brand at the end of this year.The collection will feature menswear, womenswear and accessories "made perfect for a roadtrip". And, of course, knitwears, in which the brand specializes and started from in 1974, are included.While some deemed it as a selling point catering to the world's largest luxury market, expectations to see something labeled with "made-in-Italy" but designed by Chinese are high.But before the collection gets unveiled, Zhou, in an exclusive interview with China Daily, thumbs her nose at the possible "Chinese element" like "China red", "big knots" and "qipao styles", which people take for granted about Chinese designs."Few people are seen wearing this stuff on the street. It's OK to put them on souvenirs or T-shirts but not on priced fashion pieces," Zhou says.Having lived in Rome since the age of 10 and studied in London and Paris with degrees in political science and economics, Zhou, in her 30s, described herself as an artist with a "chaotic cultural background" so that she doesn't and cannot "go with the system" of any one place."I am not one of them, so I am kind of the reverse of the Chinese poem," which translates as you cannot see the real face of a mountain because you are inside it.But the background turns out to be an uninterrupted supply of inspiration for Zhou's multimedia artwork.The prolific artist, film director, and art director for domestic video portal Tudou.com, has been hailed as a modern-day Chinese combination of Hitchcock, Yoko Ono and Cindy Sherman by Vogue China.Her works have been exhibited at Shanghai Biennale, Venice Biennale, and the Cannes Film Festival. Going beyond her Italian and Chinese background, she looked for inspiration from an "iceberg related" place. 滇川交界再發5.9級地震已造成5死17傷國道214線仍在搶通中 震中距香格里拉50公里

Concert review: Mumford turns Pavilion into cathedral of folk music

Source: Pittsburgh Post-GazetteAug.迷你倉出租 30--Mumford & Sons seems like the kind of band that must have played a club gig here somewhere along with the way.You don't go direct to the giant amphitheater playing banjos and double bass, right?Wrong.On Thursday night, the London band lured a sold-out crowd of 20,000-plus through the gridlocked traffic to the First Niagara Pavilion for a Pittsburgh-area premiere for which some fans have waited three years.The quartet put on the stirring show you'd expect from a band that won an Album of the Year Grammy, was picked to back Dylan and has appealed to this many people this fast.The unrelated Mumford & Sons came loaded with the 2009 debut "Sigh No More" and last year's follow-up, "Babel," which stayed true to the band's seriously earnest songwriting and quiet-to-loud anthemic sound.Frontman Marcus Mumford hit the stage with his three "Sons" -- keyboardist Ben Lovett, banjo player Winston Marshall, bassist Ted Dwane -- harmonizing in the dark about curses and sins on "Lovers' Eyes." They were quickly joined by a three-piece horn section, violin and cello to turn the song into one of their towering epics.There was no waiting for the hits. They got right to "Little Lion Man," instantly turning the crowd into a massive choir. And turning some people into an emotional mess. The man behind me (who looked to be in his 60s) kept saying, "Oh my God, oh my God" as if he were a teenage girl at a One Direction concert.If you like folk songs that make you feel like you're soaring through the ceiling of a cathedral into a cloud and right up toward heaven, this was your cosmic hoedown.The current smash "I Will Wait," also early in the set, was almost too big for the Pavilion and could have used all of Heinz Field, PNC Park and Point State Park to contain it. 迷你倉ame goes for "Thistle & Weeds," which rivaled Wagner or Black Sabbath for bombast.A lot of people say these Mumford songs all sound alike, but they do have a few different speeds, ranging all the way from churchy hymns ("Reminder," "Ghosts That We Knew") to the full-on banjo stomps ("Hopeless Wanderer," "The Cave").I can see why people would have a religious experience with this band, but personally I'm not there, even after witnessing it live. Give me The Avett Brothers from the backwoods of North Carolina, who did this first and better, building a following from the ground up by playing the quiet parts more tenderly, the louder parts with more abandon and everything with more humor and humility.Mumford & Sons is Americana on steroids, and positively U2-like in scope. Don't be surprised if it takes over the world.Mumford had two other UK bands along for the ride. The Vaccines, in the middle slot, didn't mess with the quiet part of the quiet-to-loud formula and threw earnestness out the window, bashing out a hyper set of electric rock 'n' roll more in the Britpop vein of Arctic Monkeys. Led by physical frontman Justin Hayward Smith, they seemed to win over the Mumford crowd by tearing it up with such should-be hits as "Blow It Up" and "Teenage Icon" and the punk workout "Bad Mood." Source: The Roanoke Times, Va.儲存Aug. 30--GLADE HILL -- Nestled on the side of Webster Road in Glade Hill sits a replica of the TARDIS, a spacecraft/phone booth from the popular British television series, "Doctor Who."The show's lead character is the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space with his companion in the TARDIS, which is modeled after a 1960s British police box.On a recent Sunday evening, nearly 50 people from the Roanoke area took a trip to visit Franklin County's TARDIS."It's legit," said Kristina Smith of Glade Hill . "It's not something you would expect to see in Franklin County."The TARDIS maker is Dante Colie, 44, who greeted the visitors dressed as the Tenth Doctor -- he wore a blue and gray pinstripe suit, Chuck Taylors, and a wavy dark brown wig over his natural blond hair. He's a fairly new fan of the show, and found his favorite Doctor to be Scottish actor David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor. The Twelfth Doctor -- actor Peter Capaldi -- was just named with much fanfare earlier this month. The show also celebrates its 50th anniversary in November.That Sunday evening, Colie told his visitors about the unveiling of his TARDIS, which weighs 650 pounds and cost about $2,500.He and a friend wheeled it out to the yard late one night and the next day, someone called the police to say someone had stolen a phone booth, Colie recounted.The police had started interviewing neighbors when one officer remembered where he'd seen it before -- it was the spaceship from "Doctor Who."Colie recalled, "She [the neighbor] said, well, I don't know about that, but it wasn't there when I went to bed last night."Everyone laughed.Building K.I.T.T.Though it took Colie about a month to build the TARDIS, it was only a side project.His life's work of 18 years is building components to convert Pontiac Firebird Trans Am cars into replicas of the talking car, K.I.T.T., from the 1980s "Knight Rider" television series .He designs custom electronic fiberglass dashboards and bumpers, which he sells to fans all over the world."The 'Knight Rider' community is huge," he said. A complete K.I.T.T. (which stands for Knight Industries Two Thousand) replica car costs $55,000."I melted when I saw that car for the first time," Colie said. He was 12 and living in Burnt Chimney when he first saw the series starring David Hasselhoff. "I mean, the show inspired me."He remembers seeing an ad on the back of a magazine for a Knight Rider replica. "I didn't have any money. I had to make it," he said.He did his best converting his 1982 Pontiac Trans Am into K.I.T.T. by building his first dashboard in ninth grade.He said he struggled in high school and was homeless in his 20s, often crashing on a friend's couch while he worked in the heating and air conditioning field."Every dime I made went back into that car," Colie said. "I spent all summer trying to build fiberglass and all winter on e新蒲崗迷你倉ectronics."The car was finally finished around 1993, he said, and was put on display for three months at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.The work was still just a hobby; Colie had jobs as a salesman for a vacuum cleaner company and later as a prosthetics technician.After getting his first computer in 1998, he became active in the online "Knight Rider" replica message boards and posted a photo of his car.That's when his business started and orders began rolling in for parts."You never know what that moment is meant to be," he said. "It could be a moment to change your life."Now his home -- and office for his company Advanced Designs in Automotive Technology -- stays busy, and not just on K.I.T.T. cars. Inside sits a half-finished R2-D2 from "Star Wars" and a working digital timer he designed, just like the one used in the late-'90s sci-fi TV series "Sliders."Longtime customer Scott Rice calls Colie a perfectionist. "He's just so creative in his ability to do things with his hands," Rice said.He met Colie in 2001 at a car show and told him, "I don't want what these people have. I want better."A couple of years later Rice was winning national awards for his replica car, built with Colie parts. Rice said his K.I.T.T. car is now used by Universal Studios for promotional tours. "For his part, he couldn't have done a better job," Rice said.Helping othersAt one point, Colie and an ex-girlfriend tried to start a Knight Foundation nonprofit to help give people second chances. The organization didn't make it off the ground, but Colie didn't give up on trying to help people."One person can make a difference," he said. "I want to help people out. That's my goal."For several years he's mentored teens, including John Trout, who grew up in the same neighborhood. Trout worked in Colie's shop when the business was first getting off the ground. He said Colie took a risk by going for such a unique and specialized field."He did it. I think it's a testament to being a little bold and following your interests," Trout said. "His interests are only matched by his desire to help other people."Trout has since graduated from college and now lives in Rochester, N.Y. and works in the alternative energy field. Colie joked, "I live through him vicariously."Colie said he might not have gone to college or had children, but he tries to inspire creativity and imagination in anyone he meets, especially those who are trying to figure out what to do with their lives.He says he hopes people see that dreams are obtainable, even if you "fall on your face.""You just have to want it bad enough," he said. Ex-Public Works head admits getting kickbacks

Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.自存倉M.Aug. 30--A former Santa Fe County Public Works director acknowledged in court earlier this week that he collected about $20,000 and three trips to Las Vegas for his participation in an alleged scheme involving kickbacks on road projects.James Lujan, who was fired from his county post in 2010 after the fraud investigation emerged, testified that, despite the scheme, there was nothing wrong with the roads built by Advantage Asphalt and Seal Coating."I believe they're still good roads," Lujan said.Lujan testified at a motions hearing on Tuesday -- where he entered guilty pleas for his own role in the alleged corruption scheme -- that he probably received close to $20,000 from Advantage Asphalt owner Joe Anthony Montoya. Source: Portland Press Herald, MaineAug.新蒲崗迷你倉 30--PORTLAND -- One of downtown Portland's most prominent and historic buildings has been sold to a landlord with a history of disputes with the city and his tenants over the condition of his properties in the Old Port.Joseph Soley's 5 Monument Square LLC bought the People's United Bank Building at 465 Congress St. on Aug. 22 for $5.6 million, said Steve Baumann, the owner of Compass Commercial Brokers, which represented Soley.The 10-story, 155-foot-tall building was built in 1909. It was the tallest building in Maine at the time and was known then as the city's first skyscraper. It stands at Congress and Preble streets, overlooking Monument Square just to the east of the Time & Temperature Building.Soley, an art buff, said Thursday that he fell in love with the building in 1969, when he drove from Baltimore to Portland on his motorcycle."When I first saw that building, I went totally bonkers," he said. "It's the most attractive building, I think, in Maine."The building's lobby has high, vaulted ceilings, pillars and marble accents. Its limestone exterior includes detailed ornamental accents.The building is one of 71 local landmarks and has been the focus of recent preservation efforts, said Hilary Bassett, executive director of Greater Portland Landmarks."This is such an important building," Bassett said. "It's beautiful. It was meant to be a spectacular space. I think that any owner who has it appreciates the quality of the architecture."Soley is a notorious landlord who owns several buildings in the Old Port, including seven properties on Exchange Street that run from Milk Street to Fore Street. He also owns the adjacent buildings that run from Fore Street to Market Street.Soley, who also owns commercial properties in the Maine Mall area of South Portland, has had repeated run-ins with Portland officials and his tenants in the Old Port.In 2009, the city evicted residents in 24 of Soley's apartments on Exchange Street because of fire code violations.In 1998, four students sued Soley after they were rented a condemned apartment at 9-11 Exchange St. The students refused to pay rent after the problems went unfixed, so Soley seized their belongings.The students were awarded $62,000 in damages and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court upheld a $1 million punitive award because Soley refused to comply with court orders to turn over information.Despite his past issues, Soley said he is committed to taking good care of his newly acquired building."What we want to do is preserve it in every way possible," he said.Soley said he hopes to rename the building 5 Monument Square, which he calls the hub of all Maine activity.The square and the building are in the city's arts district, and Soley said he hopes that area will take off, mini storagefter years in which the recession stifled economic activity."I am hoping to see Monument Square the center of a bright, new renaissance for Portland," Soley said.Soley said the building is fully rented to office users, except the top floor, which provides a view of Mount Washington on clear days.Current tenants include People's United Bank, the Career Management Associates, Dispatch Magazine, First Title of Maine and two law firms -- Cloutier Conley & Duffett, and Richardson, Whitman, Large & Badger.Soley said he is talking to potential tenants for the top floor.A bronze plaque on the building says Maine Bank & Trust, and it is still known as the Maine Bank & Trust building by many in the community.It is known by historians and preservationists as the former Fidelity Trust Co. building because of an earlier occupant.The steel-framed, limestone building was designed in the Gothic Beaux-Arts style by G. Henri Desmond of Boston. It's in the Congress Street Historic District."It's considered Portland's first true skyscraper," said Deb Andrews, the city's historic preservation manager.Desmond also designed the former Portland Press Herald building at 390 Congress St. and helped design Portland High School on Cumberland Avenue.When the Congress Street Historic District was created in 2009, architectural assessments were done for all of the buildings, and 465 Congress St. got rave reviews."I think it is in very well-preserved condition," Andrews said Thursday.Fishman Property Management has been the property manager for about 20 years. President Jim VanValkenburgh said he managed the property from 1977 to 1995 and again from May 2012 until last week.Baumann said Lincoln Center Property Management, which cares for Soley's Corner Brook Plaza and The Shops at Clarks Pond in South Portland, will manage the Congress Street building.This is the fourth time the property has changed hands in the last 20 years. According to the city records, the land and building were sold for $8.9 million in 1995, for $53.5 million in 2006 and for $12 million in 2009.It was not clear Thursday if all of those sales are directly comparable. 香港文匯報訊　據中新社報道，存倉內地將自明日起實行《中華人民共和國外國人入境出境管理條例》，條例專為海外華人設立探親Q簽證，有效期最長可達5年。　新條例仍以漢語拼音首個字母代表簽證類別。原有8類普通簽證分別是D字、Z字、X字、F字、L字、G字、C字、J字8類，對應定居、工作、學習、訪問、旅遊、過境、乘務、記者等8類。新條例增加了M（商貿）、Q（探親）、R（人才）和S（私人事務）4類，簽證迷你倉類達到12類。　Q系列簽證，將原探親事由從L字簽證中剝離，並根據申請人入境停留期限，分為Q1字和Q2字兩個具體類別。Q1居留證件有效期為180天至5年，Q2為180天以下。　Q1字簽證持有人入境後，可向公安機關出入境管理機構辦理家庭團聚類居留證件，並可憑此居留證件出境、入境及在華居留。　另外，美國駐華大使駱家輝日前表示，目前中國公民赴美簽證的「1年多簽」政策可望在未來實現「5年多簽」。自存倉

Rochester City council candidates spar over campaign letter, job layoff

Source: Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn.迷你倉新蒲崗Aug. 29--The Rochester Youth Hockey Association says a letter sent on its email July 9 soliciting votes for city council candidate Mark Hickey was a mistake, but the runner-up contends the letter influenced the primary election in Hickey's favor.Shaun Palmer, the runner-up in the seven-candidate July 30 primary for the Ward 5 city council seat, said he's consulted with two attorneys on the matter but doesn't plan to file a complaint against the nonprofit association.Federal law prohibits nonprofit organizations from participating in political campaigns or attempting to influence elections.Addressed to "Rochester Youth Hockey," the letter says "Please support Mark Hickey's run for Rochester City Council, Ward 5," and "Voter turnout for this July 30th special election will be extremely low. A margin of 50 votes could decide this election so every vote is crucial."Out of 10,893 registered voters in Ward 5, just 1,348 voted in the primary. Hickey was the clear leader -- capturing 648 votes, or 48 percent. If he had taken more than 50 percent, Hickey would have won the Ward 5 seat outright. Palmer came away with 19 percent of the votes, and the two men advanced to the general election, scheduled for Sept. 17.The letter originated with Hickey's campaign team and was not supposed to be sent out as a Rochester Youth Hockey Association email, said Hickey, who is a RYHA board member. His campaign initially sent it to a number of high school hockey groups that are not nonprofits, he said.However, somebody in the RYHA forwarded the letter to the association's member email list. And, because it came from the RYHA's email address, it appeared with the association's banner at the top, making it look like a RYHA-sanctioned email, Hickey said."But that was never the intent. It shouldn't have happened. And as soon as the association realized that it went out on the official mailing list, they immediately sent a correction and said this shouldn't have happened," Hickey said.That second email was sent the morning of July 11, saying, "You recently received an email concerning the city council race from the RYHA. That email should not have been sent to you. Previously, access to only one of the cables had been reported.The Snowden files suggest that six multinational companies, all of which are based in Britain or America, gave the GCHQ access to these cables in return for money, but it is also believed they were given no choice in the matter. The data originate from an internal GCHQ communication system called GC-Wiki.The telecommunications companies that participated in this program include four British companies -- British Telecommunications (BT), Vodafone, Viatel, and Interoute -- and two American com迷你倉anies -- Verizon and Level 3 Communications. Judge rules Highmark profits not 'excessive'

However, the judiciary is not the proper arm of government to restrain this particular charity's acquisitiveness." The legislature and the executive branch "are the ones who must say whether the accumulation of substantial profits by a nonprofit health insurer is improper."The plaintiffs have already appealed the decision to the state's Commonwealth Court, according to attorney David S. Senoff of Caroselli Beachler McTiernan & Conboy.The "plaintiffs respectfully disagree with the trial court's ruling dismissing this case prior to any trial," Mr. Senoff said. "This is particularly true since the court found plaintiffs' case to be both 'logical and compelling.' Harwich man gets probation for deadly crash

His 2007 Toyota Tacoma drifted over the center line, struck a 2006 Toyota Corolla head-on and killed the two women, according to police reports.Hope Brooks, 81, of Forestdale, a retired pediatrician and a director at Camp Good News who was a passenger in the Corolla, died that night. Jamous must regularly meet with a probation officer, update where he is working and living, as well as "obey all laws" to meet the terms, Lloyd said.If Jamous is arrested and charged with a new crime, the court will be notified and this case could be back on the docket, Lloyd said. Speeding or a traffic violation would not trigger a violation, he added.The judge can then decide if the new charge is severe enough to warrant the case returning to the docket, Lloyd said. 市民促非法旅館列刑事增阻嚇力

【本報訊】數名自稱是非法旅館受害者的市民昨到政府總部遞信，迷你倉新蒲崗指《禁止非法提供住宿》 法律實施逾3年，但根據至本年初的數據顯示，處罰個案中繳交罰款的竟不足一成，他們促請政府修改法律，將經營非法旅館列刑事罪行，增強阻嚇力。兩名大廈小業主昨到政府總部，向社會文化司司長及行政法務司司長遞信。他們表示，《禁止非法提供住宿》 法律實施逾3年，但非法旅館問題從未得到解決，經營手法愈趨隱蔽。現時非法旅館從新口岸、黑沙環、關閘一帶蔓延至�仔豪宅，不法之徒更利用網站公然招攬客源。交罰款不足一成　利益大助長違規他們指出：非法旅館已有轉型氾濫之勢，不再只為旅客提供廉價住宿，更成為豪賭或從事不法勾當人士的庇護場所。此外，根據旅遊局數據顯示，由法律生效至本年初，已調查795個單位，封印316個懷疑非法提供住宿單位，處罰119個，惟只有其中7個繳交罰款，比率不及一成。他們認為，利益大於代價數倍，總有不法之徒選擇鋌而走險經營非法旅館。「政府開放更多專道給旅客過關時，如何打擊非法旅館？」中區一座大廈的小業主陳德勝表示，罰款迷你倉出租0萬不是給予業主維修公共部分，而是政府「袋袋平安」。而非法旅館亦衍生毒品及販賣人口等問題，政府雖然付出很大成本去打擊，但市民的感受不一。他說，政府打擊非法旅館無論在執行和處罰方面都未能盡如人意，經營者利用現有法律漏洞逍遙法外的情況比比皆是，面對非法旅館猖獗以及經營手法轉變，政府有必要檢討和修改現有法律，增強法律的阻嚇力。他們建議將非法提供由住宿行政違法改為刑事罪行，除罰款的行政處罰外還需要監禁，藉以加強阻嚇力；改變行政部門執法的概念，由旅遊局轉為由治安警察局負責，相比旅遊局人員，具有刑事調查身分的警察有權進入豪宅或各地段調查，偵查手段亦更有效、快捷。陳德勝還促請政府解釋未有罰款的原因，並要求政府盡快遞交《物業管理發牌制度》，《分層所有人法律制度》予立法會審議。另外，隨行的國際中心第十座業主會主席陳炳勳則表示，該大廈會所被前任管理公司霸佔，並經營非法旅館及豪華私人會所近5年，期間偷水偷電，他們向旅遊局、房屋局等部門求助多年，惟政府回應稱要有三分之二業主同意授權才可提出訴訟，現時事件仍無法解決。迷你倉
