High School Football: Mayo shuts out Century in home opener
Source: Post-Bulletin, Rochester, Minn.mini storageSept. 07--Tommy Fjelsted was happy to carry the Addington Jug back to Rochester Mayo's locker room late Friday night. The Spartans' 24-0 Big Nine Conference football victory against rival Rochester Century means the Spartans are one step away from keeping the traveling trophy that is up for grabs when two of Rochester's public school teams meet.Mayo can keep the Jug for the season if it beats Rochester John Marshall on Sept. 27. But the Spartans have a lot of work to do before that game, and they won't look past next Friday's game at Mankato East."Right after (Friday's) game we told each other this wasn't going to be good enough," Fjelsted said. "It's just the mental mistakes. I think we're physically ready for any team we go up against. We just have to eliminate the mental mistakes."Mayo was able to rebound after a season-opening 41-14 loss at Owatonna a week prior. The Spartans also halted Century's momentum. The Panthers opened the season with a 42-19 victory against Mankato East, a game in which the Century put up 329 yards of offense. Both teams are now 1-1 in the Big Nine and 1-1 overall."Mayo beat us on both sides of the ball," said Century coach Jon Vik, whose team was attempting to overcome injuries to several starters. "They took it to us. Give their offensive and defensive lines a lot of credit."Mayo's lines controlled play throughout. The Spartans held Century to just 22 total yards of offense in the first half, including minus-13 yards rushing on 14 attempts.Mayo got on the scoreboard on the third play of the second quarter when Loren Lorang walked in from a yard out to cap a 12-play drive that lasted more than five minutes.Just more than six minutes later, the Spartans took advantage of a short field after Fjelsted blocked a punt that gave Mayo the ball at Century's 27. On the third play of the ensuing drive, quarterback Jay Alston rolled out to his left and fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to Michael Michalak. The duo connected for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 lead. That's how the score remained at halftime."We were fired up for every practice this week," said Fjelsted, who also sacked Century QB Alex Beise twice. "We know there's a lot of season left, but the seniors know that we lose some time (on our high school careers) every week."Century had the ball in Mayo territory on three of its 11 drives, but never made it inside the Spartans 20. The Panthers best drive was halted by the end of the first half. An 18-yard completion from Beise to Alex Ney, plus a personal foul penalty on Mayo at the end of the play, gave Century the ball at the Mayo 20 as time ticked down in the half. But Beise was sacked, then had a pass into the end zone intercepted by Kyle Bergstrom to end the second quarter."Our defense played a great game all the way througself storage," Mayo coach Donny Holcomb said. "Our line dominated; the kids definitely played with fire and passion. Offensively, we're just not quite clicking in the run game or passing game."Holcomb was also pleased with Mayo's special teams. Kicker Jerry Brownell booted a 32-yard field goal and three extra points, and he averaged 31.5 yards on four punts. Michalak provided a spark in the return game, with punt returns of 27, 28, 17 and 32 yards. But Mayo managed only two short scoring drives in the second half -- a 20-yard drive to set up Brownell's field goal and a 36-yard drive after Michalak's last punt return that ended in a 5-yard Alston-to Matt Rogers touchdown pass. Otherwise, Century's defense did a nice job of holding Mayo's offense in check."I told our kids at halftime that Mankato East was down 21-0 to us (in the season opener) and came out and played as hard as they could for the whole second half," Vik said. "That's what we did. It shows the character of our guys. We just have some things we need to correct."Mayo plays at Mankato East next week, while Century plays host to Winona.Mayo 24, Century 0Century#0#0#0#0#--#0Mayo#0#14#3#7#--#24Second quarterMayo -- Loren Lorang 1 run (run failed) 10:40.Drive: 12 plays, 69 yards, 5:16.
